A Guide to Sarcoma Cancer: Understanding Its Causes, Symptoms, and Management
Listen to
Sarcoma is a rare cancer that comes from in the bones, muscles, fat, blood vessels, or connective tissues. It makes up approximately 1% of all cancers in adults but is more common in children and young adults. Sarcomas are classified into two main categories: bone sarcomas (affecting bones) and soft tissue sarcomas (affecting muscles, fat, and other tissues).
Sarcoma's fundamental cause is frequently unclear, although environmental exposures, genetic factors, and some inherited disorders can raise the risk. Pain, swelling, and the development of a lump typically in the belly or limbsare typical signs.
Surgery to remove the tumour is usually the first step in treating sarcoma. Chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy are then used to stop the tumour from returning. This episode of the Sarcoma Cancer podcast will cover how patients with sarcoma can benefit from knowing the causes, identifying the symptoms, and promoting routine checkups.
