GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) - Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment
By Pace Hospitals February 9, 2021
GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) or chronic acid reflux is a long-term condition where acid from the stomach comes up into the esophagus. GERD is the chronic form of acid reflux and heartburn. If you have symptoms of acid reflux more than twice a week, you might have a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Most people can manage the discomfort of GERD with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications. But some people with GERD may need stronger medications or surgery to ease symptoms.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a long-term digestive disorder characterized by the regular backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, leading to irritation. Common symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, and chest pain. GERD can result from factors like obesity, pregnancy, smoking, and certain foods or medications that relax the esophageal sphincter. Treatment options typically involve lifestyle modifications, such as dietary changes and weight management, along with medications like antacids or proton pump inhibitors to reduce stomach acid. In severe cases, surgical interventions may be considered to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter.
