Organ Donation Information - Types, Process, Registration & Importance
By Pace Hospitals August 10, 2023
Organ donation is a multistep process, begins with an investigation into the cause of death, followed by a review of the donor's eligibility (living or dead) to have their organ(s) taken for treatment, based on inclusion/exclusion criteria. As lifestyle diseases develop, organ damage or failure may necessitate an organ transplant. Organ donation gives those with organ failure or major medical conditions a second chance at life.

Kidney donation is a life-saving procedure for individuals with kidney failure looking for a healthy kidney, a transplant can significantly improve their quality of life and extend their lifespan. It can be classified into two main types: living donations and deceased donations. To be eligible as a donor, individuals generally need to be in good health, aged between 18 and 65, and have compatible blood and tissue types with the recipient.

The procedure involves the surgical removal of a kidney, which can be performed through traditional open surgery or minimally invasive techniques. Although complications are uncommon, potential risks may include infection, bleeding, or decreased kidney function.

The impact of kidney donation is significant, providing kidney transplantation recipients with a second chance at life while allowing donors to contribute meaningfully to another person's health and well-being.
