Successful Total Left Knee Replacement Surgery for 51-Year-Old Female with Severe Knee Pain

Pace Hospitals

PACE Hospitals’ orthopaedics team successfully performed a total left knee replacement surgery for a 51-year-old female patient with complaints of left knee pain and difficulty in walking due to the pain.

Chief Complaints

A 51-year-old female patient presented to the Orthopaedics Department at PACE Hospitals, Hyderabad, with chief complaints of bilateral knee pain, predominantly affecting the left knee more than right for the past few months, along with difficulty in walking and performing daily activities due to pain.

Diagnosis

Upon her admission to PACE Hospitals and after reviewing the clinical history and conducting a systemic examination, the diagnosis of left knee osteoarthritis was established. The findings revealed left knee effusion, tenderness along the joint line, and a restricted range of motion, with pain.

Medical Decision Making

Considering the patient's pain and difficulty in carrying out daily tasks, along with the diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the left knee, it was decided that surgical intervention was required. After a comprehensive discussion with the patient's guardians and obtaining their informed consent, Dr. Raghuram, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, chose to proceed with a total left knee replacement.

Surgical Procedure

Upon admission with left knee osteoarthritis, the patient was deemed fit for surgery and subsequently underwent a left-sided Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery, carried out under general anaesthesia.

Postoperative Care

The patient's immediate postoperative recovery was smooth, with no major complications observed. During her stay, she was administered the required antibiotics, analgesics, and supportive medications. The wound dressings were changed regularly, and the surgical site remained free of infection.

Discharge Medications

Upon discharge, the patient was prescribed antibiotics, pain relief and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

Emergency Care

The patient’s guardians were instructed to visit the emergency ward of PACE Hospitals, Hyderabad, in case of any symptoms such as fever, worsening knee pain, swelling, or any abnormal drainage from the surgical site.

Significance of Total left knee replacement procedure in osteoarthritis

The Total Knee Replacement (TKR) procedure is a treatment for osteoarthritis that involves replacing the damaged knee joint with an artificial prosthesis. This procedure reduces chronic pain and improves mobility by restoring normal knee function, reducing pain, and addressing abnormalities.

Patients often see a significant improvement in their ability to perform daily activities and overall quality of life, with less need for pain medication and a return to an active lifestyle. While rehabilitation and physiotherapy are necessary for recovery, the long-term benefits of reduced pain and better knee function make TKR a highly effective treatment for osteoarthritis.
