PACE Hospitals

PACE Hospitals’ orthopaedics team successfully performed a total left knee replacement surgery for a 51-year-old female patient with complaints of left knee pain and difficulty in walking due to the pain.

Chief Complaints

A 51-year-old female patient with a BMI of 29.6 presented to the Orthopaedics Department at PACE Hospitals, Hitech City, Hyderabad, Hyderabad, with chief complaints of bilateral knee pain, predominantly affecting the left knee, along with difficulty walking and performing daily activities due to pain.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis Upon her admission to PACE Hospitals and after reviewing the clinical history and CT scan reports, the diagnosis of left knee osteoarthritis was established. The findings revealed left knee effusion, tenderness along the joint line, and a restricted range of motion, with pain.

After the assessment, she was advised to undergo Left Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment in Hyderabad, India, under the care of the Orthopaedic Department to ensure comprehensive management.

Medical Decision Making

Considering the patient's pain and difficulty in carrying out daily tasks, along with the diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the left knee, it was decided that surgical intervention was required. After a comprehensive discussion with the patient's guardians and obtaining their informed consent, Dr. Raghuram, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, chose to proceed with a total knee replacement (TKR) surgery.

Surgical Procedure

Upon admission with left knee osteoarthritis, the patient was deemed fit for surgery and subsequently underwent a Left-Sided Total Knee Replacement Surgery in Hyderabad at PACE Hospitals.

Postoperative Care

The patient's immediate postoperative recovery was smooth, with no major complications observed. During her stay, she was administered the required antibiotics, analgesics, and supportive medications. The wound dressings were changed regularly, and the surgical site remained free of infection.

Discharge Medications

Upon discharge, the patient was prescribed antibiotics, pain relief and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

Emergency Care

The patient’s guardians were instructed to visit the emergency ward of PACE Hospitals, Hyderabad, in case of any symptoms such as fever, worsening knee pain, swelling, or any abnormal drainage from the surgical site.

Review and follow-up notes

The patient was advised to return to the Orthopaedic Department at PACE Hospitals for a follow-up appointment. During this visit, a comprehensive evaluation, wound assessment, and monitoring of postoperative recovery would be performed.

Conclusion

This case highlights the effectiveness of advanced surgical intervention and patient-centered care in managing osteoarthritis. It underscores the value of expert-led Degenerative Joint Disease treatment in Hyderabad, India, contributing to improved mobility and quality of life for patients.

Significance of Total left knee replacement procedure in osteoarthritis

An orthopedic doctor/orthopaedic surgeon considers the TKR procedure to be the best treatment for osteoarthritis, as it involves replacing the damaged knee joint with an artificial prosthesis. This procedure reduces chronic pain and improves mobility by restoring normal knee function, reducing pain, and addressing abnormalities.

Patients often see a significant improvement in their ability to perform daily activities and overall quality of life, with less need for pain medication and a return to an active lifestyle. While rehabilitation and physiotherapy are necessary for recovery, the long-term benefits of reduced pain and better knee function make TKR a highly effective treatment for osteoarthritis.
