World Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) Day has been observed globally on the first Saturday of every May (excluding May 1st and in such instances, it shifts to 2nd Saturday) with the intention to promote awareness of the illness and the impact it has on people's lives as it affects both physical and emotional health.
This year 2024, World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day is observed on May 4th (Saturday). On this day, many people from local and worldwide organizations gather to work together to counter the myths, spread awareness and share information about the disease.
Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic rheumatic inflammatory illness that affects the spinal cord and sacroiliac joints, such as the lower spine and pelvis. Ankylosing spondylitis is characterized by a decrease in spinal mobility as well as the presence of postural abnormalities, buttock discomfort, hip pain, peripheral arthritis, enthesitis (inflammation of the entheses), and dactylitis (swelling of fingers or toes). It is frequently diagnosed in patients under the age of 40, and about 80% of patients experience their first symptoms before the age of 30. Men are at a higher risk than women to have AS and in relatives of the patient who is affected with AS, are at an increased risk.
This year, 2024, the theme of World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day is “Signs and Symptoms.” This theme aims to educate patients, the public, and healthcare professionals about the critical red flags associated with axSpA, such as persistent back pain, stiffness, and fatigue.
Focusing on signs and symptoms for World AS Day 2024 is essential, as early detection and understanding of these indications can substantially impact the lives of those affected. Signs and symptoms of axSpA may be misdiagnosed as other medical conditions, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment.
Year By Year Themes for World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day
According to reports, there are currently 16.5 lakh people in India were diagnosed with AS, and according to a recent study by Global Data, the number is expected to increase at a rate of 2.95% annually. Because this disease is poorly understood, 69% of patients either receive a false diagnosis or remain asymptomatic, which worsens their condition.
Rheumatologists opine that early diagnosis and treatment of AS will have effective results, and deformities like the bamboo spine (complication of AS) can be resolved, halting the disease progression. World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day lays the platform to create awareness regarding early diagnosis and provide knowledge on the disease condition and the available advanced treatments.
Participation on this day can take several forms, like as attending an event, donating funds for organizations, commenting on social media posts, presenting a personal story, helping the co-AS patients by guiding them to a rheumatologist or providing awareness about the importance of medication adherence and regular follow-ups.
Having a decent night's sleep may be tough in patients with AS, as poor bedding might worsen night time pain. Keeping the spine straight while sleeping on the side and an "S curve” while lying on the back should be preferred.
To best spine support, a mattress with a medium level of firmness should be preferred
