Pace Hospitals

Listen to

Pyrexia of Unknown Origin (PUO) represents a prolonged fever, typically lasting over 3 weeks, with no apparent cause despite extensive medical testing. PUO is categorized into four types: classic, where the cause is unknown even after hospitalization; nosocomial, where the fever arises during a hospital stay; neutropenic, affecting patients with a weakened immune system; and HIV-related, associated with individuals infected with HIV.

The causes of PUO are diverse and can include infections, autoimmune diseases, cancers, and certain medications. Common infectious causes are tuberculosis and abscesses, while autoimmune conditions include diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Cancer-related causes may consist of lymphoma or leukaemia.

Join the PACE Hospitals Podcast with Dr. Kaku Madhurya | Consultant General Physician and Diabetologist at PACE Hospitals, Hitech City, Hyderabad, India, as we explore Pyrexia of Unknown Origin (PUO) and its significant impact on health.
